The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Corey S. Traylor (MCSN: 2388893), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Electrician with Service Company, Ninth Engineer Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 26 February 1969. While assigned temporary additional duty as a Generator Operator in support of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Advisory Team SEVENTEEN, Lance Corporal Traylor volunteered to accompany Mobile Advisory Team 1-16 on a search and destroy operation in eastern Son Tinh District. In the afternoon, the command group began to draw a heavy volume of enemy automatic weapons fire from positions approximately 350 meters to their front. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Traylor repeatedly set up his M-60 machine gun and fearlessly exposed himself to the heavy fire in order to place accurate fire on the enemy positions. After the team leader was wounded, Lance Corporal Traylor moved throughout the fire-swept terrain, gathering up the last of the ammunition to fire it at the enemy force which had advanced to within 100 meters of his position, and simultaneously maintained radio contact with the district headquarters as he called in and accurately adjusted supporting artillery and mortar fire. After his ammunition was expended he moved throughout the area rendering first aid, while concurrently directing the movement and fire of an armored relief force. His heroic efforts inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. Lance Corporal Traylor’s daring initiative, superb leadership, courage and unswerving devotion to duty were instrumental in preventing the numerically superior enemy force from overrunning his position and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
