The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Larry Dan Todd (MCSN: 2215692), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Service Company, Eleventh Engineer Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 2 February 1968, the Cam Lo District Headquarters was attacked by an estimated regimental size North Vietnamese Army force firing machine guns, mortars, recoilless rifles and rockets. Although wounded in the initial moments of the attack, Corporal Todd unhesitatingly ran to the outer perimeter of the camp and, undaunted by the enemy fire around him, began delivering a heavy volume of fire from his grenade launcher upon the assaulting enemy force. Wounded a second time by fragments from an exploding rocket round, he ignored his painful injuries and continued to move from one position to another, firing his weapon at the enemy. Informed that there were numerous casualties in the South Compound, Corporal Todd disregarded his own safety and maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain to the aid of the injured men. Ignoring the enemy rounds impacting around him, he continuously moved about the hazardous area, assisting in evacuating the casualties to the helicopter landing zone and placing them aboard aircraft. Steadfastly refusing medical treatment, he continued to aid the injured men until ordered to embark aboard the helicopter for evacuation and medical treatment. In large measure due to his aggressive fighting spirit and resolute determination in the face of extreme personal danger, he was instrumental in his unit accounting for 143 North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed, 34 captured and the seizure of over 100 weapons. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Todd was an inspiration to all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
