The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George Grant Todd (MCSN: 2306711), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 May 1968, during Operation Allen Brook in Quang Nam Province, Corporal Todd’s unit was assigned to assist a friendly platoon which had become heavily engaged with a large enemy force. En route to the friendly unit, the Marines and their supporting tanks came under a heavy volume of fire from a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Corporal Todd unhesitatingly exposed himself to the intense fire and aggressively led his squad in a determined assault upon the enemy, resulting in two hostile soldiers confirmed killed. Consolidating his men to join the remainder of the Company, Corporal Todd alertly observed a mortally wounded tank commander. Disregarding his own safety he fearlessly mounted the casualty’s vehicle and, ignoring the intense enemy fire impacting around him, skillfully commenced directing .50 caliber machine gun fire at the hostile positions. While delivering accurate suppressive fire upon the enemy, he was seriously wounded and knocked from the tank. Ignoring his painful injuries, he continued to direct his squad’s fire upon the hostile emplacements and ably assisted in the evacuation of casualties. Steadfastly refusing medical evacuation, he continued his determined efforts until all his men had been treated. His superb leadership and aggressive fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who served with him and contributed immeasurably to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Corporal Todd upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
