The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal John G. Tinker (MCSN: 2295077), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 28 October 1967. Late in the evening, Corporal Tinker led his squad on a night ambush. While en route, the squad came under devastating automatic weapons fire from a numerically superior enemy force. Quickly assessing the situation, he maneuvered his squad on line and opened fire with his grenade launcher. Although wounded during the ensuing battle, he undauntedly continued to deliver accurate fire upon the enemy positions until the severity of his wound forced him to relinquish his weapon to a fellow Marine. Observing a wounded comrade, he courageously moved to his side to render medical aid. Mortally wounded during this action, Corporal Tinker, by his outstanding courage and initiative, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
