The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert B. Thompson (MCSN: 2275075), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF. On 20 April 1968, during Operation BAXTER-GARDEN, Corporal Thompson’s unit was conducting a search and destroy operation in Thua Thien Province when the Marines suddenly came under intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. Reacting instantly, Corporal Thompson skillfully maneuvered his squad across the fire-swept terrain to positions located approximately thirty meters from the hostile emplacements. Directing his men to provide covering fire, he unhesitatingly exposed himself to the hostile fire while throwing hand grenades at an enemy machine gun emplacement. Unable to silence the enemy weapon, he fearlessly commenced a determined assault upon the hostile position, simultaneously firing his rifle and throwing hand grenades. As he approached the enemy position, he was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions were an inspiration to all who served with him. By his courage, aggressive fighting sprit and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Thompson upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
