The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Hunter M. Terry (MCSN: 2448732), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 4 December 1968, while participating in a company size assault on a North Vietnamese bunker complex, Lance Corporal Terry’s platoon sustained several casualties as a result of intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire. Maneuvering to the platoon commander’s position, he informed him of the situation and then unhesitatingly led two men across the fire-swept terrain to evacuate a casualty from the hazardous zone. While returning to the open area in order to assist another injured Marine, he was knocked to the ground by two enemy rounds which impacted against an ammunition bandoleer slung across his chest. Undaunted by this experience, he signaled to his companions that he was unharmed and then fearlessly proceeded to move another injured Marine to cover. When denied permission to participate in a third evacuation effort, he provided suppressive fire to cover his companions who were advancing on the hostile position. On 7 December, while positioned on the company’s defensive perimeter, Lance Corporal Terry sustained a serious wound which necessitated his medical evacuation. Despite his painful injury, he continued to encourage his companions until he was evacuated. His heroic and timely actions inspired all those who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his courage, outstanding initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Lance Corporal Terry upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
