The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Bernard Eaml Terhorst (MCSN: 1896541), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 April 1967, Sergeant Terhorst displayed outstanding professional skill and heroism during a search and destroy operation near Nui Lac Son, when his platoon conducted an attack on Viet Cong positions across an open rice paddy. In the initial moments of the assault, the platoon came under intense small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire and sustained heavy casualties, including the platoon commander. Exhibiting bold initiative and leadership, Sergeant Terhorst unhesitatingly assumed command, reorganized his unit and directed effective suppressive fire on the Viet Cong positions. Disregarding his own safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire, moving among his men and encouraging them and, as a result of his aggressiveness, led the majority of the platoon to a covered tree line. Skillfully organizing defensive position, he continued to direct suppressive fire and successfully repelled an enemy assault. His exceptional presence of mind and professionalism were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly were instrumental in reducing casualties and saving lives. By his superior leadership, uncommon courage and unswerving devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Terhorst upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
