The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Byron L. Tennant (MCSN: 0-106684), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 February 1969, Second Lieutenant Tennant’s platoon was occupying a defensive position in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of hostile mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire and sustained several casualties. Reacting instantly, Second Lieutenant Tennant fearlessly moved about the fire-swept area shouting orders and words of encouragement to his men and directing their suppressive fire at the attacking enemy soldiers. Disregarding his own safety, he continued his determined efforts as he fearlessly exposed himself to the intense hostile fire to assist in moving wounded men to covered positions. After assuring that the casualties were protected from further inquiry, he commenced maneuvering toward a vantage point from which he could observe the tactical situation when he was mortally wounded by the detonation of a hostile explosive device. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his platoon repelling the enemy assault. Tennant contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
