The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Kenneth David Stankiewicz (MCSN: 2063870), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 August 1965. Observing his squad leader lying wounded with a pack of explosives smoldering upon his back and fearlessly moved from his covered position to drag the burning explosives away from his squad leader. He then continued to expose himself to increasing hostile small arms and mortar fire in order to deliver accurate fire upon the enemy positions, pinning them down and allowing the successful evacuation of his squad leaders and three other wounded men. Later that day he was mortally wounded by enemy fire while being evacuated. By his inspiring actions and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Stankiewicz reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
