The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Michael James Sireci (MCSN: 2142269), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 February 1967, Corporal Sireci’s platoon was participating in a search and clear mission during Operation DESOTO when the unit was suddenly subjected to intense automatic weapons fire while crossing a clearing. Almost immediately, one Marine was killed and several were wounded, including the platoon commander and platoon sergeant. Exhibiting exceptional tactical ability and initiative, Corporal Sireci skillfully deployed his squad to provide covering fire for the Marines who lay wounded and pinned down by the concentrated enemy fire. Observing a Corpsman attempting to move the platoon commander out of the hazardous area, Corporal Sireci unhesitatingly ran through the intense Viet Cong fire and assisted in moving the Marine to a relatively secure position. Undaunted by the perilous situation, he continued to encourage and inspire his men in their efforts to repulse the enemy attack. On two occasions, Corporal Sireci fearlessly moved seventy-five meters across the fire-swept terrain to evacuate his fellow Marines. His steadfast determination and heroic actions in the face of grave personal risk inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the successful accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his outstanding leadership, courage and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Sireci upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
