The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Kamille K. Shibley (MCSN: 0-103023), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company I, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 April 1969, the Third Battalion was conducting a search and destroy operation eleven miles south of DaNang when a company became heavily engaged with a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying well-fortified positions. When the advance of the Marine unit was halted by intense enemy fire, First Lieutenant Shibley’s company was assigned the mission of reinforcing the beleaguered unit. Skillfully maneuvering his company to a vantage point, First Lieutenant Shibley assessed the situation and commenced a fierce assault upon the hostile emplacements. During the initial moments of the attack, his unit sustained numerous casualties, including two platoon commanders. Undaunted by the heavy volume of enemy fire impacting near him, he fearlessly reorganized his unit, evacuated casualties, and directed supporting arms fire. Continuing his determined efforts, he then launched a savage attack upon the flank of the North Vietnamese emplacements, enabling the beleaguered unit to move to more advantageous positions and inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in his unit’s accounting for seventy-two North Vietnamese soldiers killed. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, First Lieutenant Shibley upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
