The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Edward Joseph Sherman (MCSN: 0-105653), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Platoon Commander, Third Platoon, Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 June 1969, while occupying a portion of the Company’s defensive perimeter in the An Hoa Valley, First Lieutenant Sherman’s platoon came under heavy attack from an North Vietnamese Army assault force. Learning that the southeast sector of his platoon’s position had been overrun and the North Vietnamese Army now occupied that position, he effectively directed mortar fire into the enemy’s position and dispersed the enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Sherman then rushed from his position within the perimeter and assaulted the hill. After directing an intense barrage of fire on the enemy, he rushed the North Vietnamese Army’s occupied position on the perimeter, causing them to break rank and flee. After gaining the position, he continued firing, inflicting several casualties on the retreating North Vietnamese Army. By First Lieutenant Sherman’s inspiring leadership, courageous actions, and selfless dedication, the enemy’s attack was repulsed and the perimeter secured; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
