The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Robert Patrick Shellem (MCSN: 2347256), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against Communist insurgent forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 28 April 1968, Lance Corporal Shellem’s squad was maneuvering toward an ambush site in the vicinity of Duong Lam (3), Quang Nam Province. As the unit approached the designated location, enemy soldiers threw several hand grenades in the midst of the Marines. Hearing the grenades hit the ground, Lance Corporal Shellem immediately shouted a warning to his companions and simultaneously turned around, pushing the Marine behind him to the ground. Turning back to the front, he observed another Marine standing dangerously close to a grenade. Disregarding his own safety, he ran forward and forced the Marine away from the hazardous ordnance. Suddenly, the grenade detonated, mortally wounding Lance Corporal Shellem. His heroic and timely actions saved the lives of two fellow Marines and were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his courage and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Shellem upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
