The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Donald T. Sellers (MCSN: 2093450), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Guide with Company D, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours on 2 February 1968, the Cam Lo District Headquarters came under heavy artillery, mortar and recoilless rifle fire followed by a well coordinated ground attack by a numerically superior enemy force. Observing an unmanned machine gun and realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Sellers fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire as he moved to the defensive position and immediately began delivering effective fire against the enemy in a tree line where he had previously observed muzzle flashes of enemy mortars and recoilless rifles. As a result of his aggressive fighting spirit and accurate suppressive fire, numerous enemy emplacements were silenced. Exhibiting exceptional leadership and bold initiative throughout the five hour battle, Sergeant Sellers courageously ignored the intense fire around him as he moved from one defensive position to another, directing and controlling effective fire against the advancing enemy and shouting encouragement to his men. When ammunition supplies became dangerously low, he unhesitatingly maneuvered across the fire-swept area and obtained vital ammunition, ensuring that his men could continue delivering uninterrupted suppressive fire. In addition, Sergeant Sellers repeatedly disregarded his own safety to move his wounded companions from the hazardous area to protected positions. His determined and selfless actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in repulsing the attackers, accounting for 144 enemy confirmed killed, 100 probable killed, the capture of thirty-eight soldiers and confiscation of numerous weapons and items of equipment. By his superior professionalism, steadfast courage and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Sellers upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
