The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Woodrow Scriven (MCSN: 2300481), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 2 May 1968, shortly after commencing an attack on Dinh To Village in Quang Tri Province, two platoons from Company G were counterattacked by a large North Vietnamese force. Several men, including Sergeant Scriven, were wounded by heavy enemy mortar fire. Completely disregarding his own safety and despite his own wound, he unhesitatingly crawled forward under intense enemy small arms and mortar fire to aid the casualties. Refusing medical aid, he assisted a Corpsman in administering first aid to the injured Marines and then organized their evacuation. With mortar rounds impacting all around him, he personally led three of the casualties who could not see to safety to await the medical evacuation helicopters. His gallant actions at great personal risk were instrumental in saving the lives of five of his comrades. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Sergeant Scriven upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
