The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Daniel R. Schultz (MCSN: 1962874), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 June 1965. While on a combat patrol west of DaNang, Corporal Schultz, a Fire Team Leader, was maneuvering with his squad in an area known to be mined. Three members of his patrol had already become casualties and had been evacuated. As the squad moved from the mined area, a Marine in front of him tripped a wire connected to a booby trapped grenade. Upon observing this, Corporal Schultz immediately knocked a man near him to the ground. Unconcerned for his personal safety, he shielded the Marine with his own body from the ensuing blast. Through his valiant efforts, Corporal Schultz saved his fellow Marine from serious injury, although he himself was wounded seriously by shrapnel. Corporal Schultz’s initiative and courageous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
