The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Morris Elmo Ruddick, Jr. (MCSN: 0-93410), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with the Third Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Force Reconnaissance Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 14 June 1967, First Lieutenant Ruddick led a reconnaissance patrol into an area known to contain heavily fortified enemy positions around Hills 174 and 117, north of Cam Lo in Quang Tri Province in an attempt to locate the wreckage of a helicopter and rescue possible survivors. Moving along a trail, the patrol suddenly encountered a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force which quickly surrounded the small unit. Reacting instantly, First Lieutenant Ruddick calmly directed the return fire of his men and demonstrated exceptional tactical skill as he maneuvered his patrol through the enemy force, killing one North Vietnamese soldier. Although the enemy was aware that his unit was in the area, he steadfastly continued his mission and advanced into the hazardous territory. Proceeding down a path believed to lead to the wreckage of the helicopter, the patrol again came in contact with a large enemy force. Displaying exceptional presence of mind and decisiveness, First Lieutenant Ruddick aggressively maneuvered his force, killing two enemy soldiers without sustaining any friendly casualties. Forced to engage the enemy a third time, he exhibited superior tactical ability and exemplary courage as he directed his men in inflicting numerous casualties on the hostile force. Despite the ever-increasing danger, he resolutely continued on his mission until directed to return to friendly positions. By his outstanding leadership, dauntless courage and loyal devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Ruddick inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
