The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Roy G. Rubin (MCSN: 2293045), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 March 1969, Company F was conducting a search and destroy operation near Dong Ha Mountain in Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under intense automatic weapons fire from a well-concealed hostile force. Reacting instantly, Lance Corporal Rubin maneuvered his men into an advantageous position and set up his machine gun. While delivering a heavy volume of suppressive fire upon the enemy, Lance Corporal Rubin maneuvered his men into an advantageous position and set up his machine gun. While delivering a heavy volume of suppressive fire upon the enemy, Lance Corporal Rubin alertly observed a wounded Marine lying in a dangerously exposed position approximately twenty yards in front of his machine gun. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Rubin rushed across the fire-swept terrain in an attempt to aid the fallen Marine. After throwing a grenade into the hostile position, Lance Corporal Rubin was himself mortally wounded by hostile automatic weapons fire. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Rubin upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life to the service of his country.
