The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Edward C. Rozanski (MCSN: 2250985), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader in Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 September 1967. During Operation Swift, Lance Corporal Rozanski’s platoon was halted by the fire from a well-concealed enemy machine gun. Exercising complete disregard for his own safety, he rapidly moved forward some 50 meters across a fire-swept paddy and destroyed the machine-gun emplacement with a hand grenade, allowing his platoon to advance to his position. Mortally wounded during this encounter, Lance Corporal Rozanski, by his steadfast determination, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great danger, served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
