The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Douglas Royster (MCSN: 2097047), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company A, First Engineer Battalion, attached to Company G, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, during Operation BEAVER in the Republic of Vietnam on 26 June 1966. On that morning in an area northwest of Hue, Company G came under devastating small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire from an entrenched enemy force estimated to be battalion strength. In the ensuing battle, numerous casualties were sustained as the Marines advanced upon the enemy positions. Observing a wounded Marine in an exposed position, Lance Corporal Royster, with complete disregard for his own safety, advanced through the intense enemy fire to assist his wounded comrade. Placing the man upon his shoulders, he carried the casualty 200 meters through the devastating enemy fire to a place of relative safety. Observing another wounded comrade, he once again, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the intense fire to aid the casualty. While attempting to aid the man and move him to a covered position, Lance Corporal Royster was mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, gallant fighting spirit and devotion to his fellow Marines, Lance Corporal Royster reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
