The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal David J. Romig (MCSN: 2621030), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action , in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as an Intelligence Scout with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division. During the early morning hours of 15 March 1970, while Lance Corporal Romig and a Kit Carson Scout occupied an observation tower at Phu Loc (6) near Liberty Bridge in Quang Nam Province, the hamlet came under a heavy volume of mortar and rocket-propelled grenade fire from a large enemy force which was preparing to launch a ground attack. During the initial moments of the assault, the Kit Carson Scout was killed and Lance Corporal Romig was seriously wounded but remained in his dangerously exposed position to adjust supporting mortar and artillery fire on the attacking force. When the enemy was thwarted by the accuracy of the fire and shifted its route of approach, Lance Corporal Romig skillfully altered the direction of defensive fire. Despite his painful wounds and the personal danger involved, he continued his vigorous efforts until the hostile unit, having sustained numerous casualties in its unsuccessful attempt to penetrate the defensive perimeter, was forced to abandon the attack and retreat. Lance Corporal Romig’s heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and turned a potentially chaotic situation into a sound Marine victory. His courage, determined efforts, and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
