The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Robert T. Rohweller (MCSN: 0-100638), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as the Commanding Officer of Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 February 1969, during Operation Dewey Canyon, Company K was advancing toward its objective, Hill 718 twenty-four miles southwest of Quang Tri City, when the lead element came under intense fire from a well-concealed hostile force. Reacting instantly, First Lieutenant Rohweller skillfully redeployed his lead units for a counterattack, but before he could maneuver his men forward, the company was attacked from the rear and the command group came under sniper fire from the flank. Retaining his calm composure, First Lieutenant Rohweller quickly directed one platoon to move to the rear, and attack an adjacent enemy-held hill and simultaneously supervised the assault of his other two platoons upon the hostile objective. While his men were thus engaged, he fearlessly silenced the sniper fire himself, then unhesitatingly moved across the fire-swept terrain from one position to another, encouraging his men. His heroic actions and superb tactical ability inspired all who observed him and were responsible for his unit being able to account for seven enemy soldiers killed, repulse the attackers, and secure the Marine objective. By his courage, aggressive leadership and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, First Lieutenant Rohweller upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
