The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal John Calvin Robinson, II (MCSN: 2236557), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 10 August 1968, while participating in a battalion size search and destroy operation, Company B was assigned to secure Hill 310 in Quang Nam Province. As the lead elements advanced toward the objective, the Marines suddenly came under intense rocket and automatic weapons fire from a large, well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. During the ensuing fire fight, the company became pinned down and sustained numerous casualties. Supporting the attacking Marines with devastating anti-tank assault weapons fire, Lance Corporal Robinson unhesitatingly deployed his squad to provide covering fire while the wounded men were evacuated in order to allow artillery and air strikes to be employed against the enemy emplacements. Alertly observing a seriously injured Marine lying in an area dangerously exposed to the hostile fire, Lance Corporal Robinson immediately left his covered position to aid the wounded man. Fearlessly maneuvering across twenty-five meters of fire-swept terrain, he reached the side of the casualty. Ignoring the enemy rounds that impacted near, he calmly placed his injured comrade across his shoulders, and while returning to a friendly position, he was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Robinson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
