The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Benny D. Rinehart (MCSN: 0-72921), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-ONE (HMM-361), FIRST Marine Aircraft Wing, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 August 1965, during Operation STARLITE, Captain Rinehart demonstrated exceptional gallantry and superb aeronautical skill in three evacuation flights into fully exposed landing zones swept by intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. On each occasion, he fearlessly remained in the embattled zones while the wounded were embarked, completing the mission with stalwart determination despite Viet Cong fire which severely damaged his aircraft and wounded the copilot. When the first helicopter was deemed unsafe for further action, he unhesitatingly took another and returned for additional wounded Marines. Sustaining similar damaged once again, he piloted a third aircraft, and, during the hazardous ten hour operation, successfully evacuated forty-four casualties. His gallantry at great risk to his own life enabled his wounded comrades to receive prompt medical care and undoubtedly saved many from death or further injury. Captain Rinehart’s exceptional determination in the face of grave peril, coupled with superior airmanship and unswerving dedication to duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
