The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Joaquim Vaz Rebelo (MCSN: 2254243), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radioman with the Third Platoon, Company B, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 January 1967. Upon being heli-lifted into a blocking position in support of a unit of the Second Battalion in the vicinity of DaNang, Lance Corporal Rebelo’s platoon immediately came under heavy sniper fire as they disembarked. After moving to a tree line about 200 meters away, the platoon received heavy enemy machine-gun and automatic rifle fire from a large number of well-entrenched Viet Cong positions. By noon, due to the high temperatures, several members of the platoon including the Platoon Commander, were suffering from heat exhaustion. Lance Corporal Rebelo assumed the responsibility for reorganizing the unit and providing medical aid for the wounded. Subsequently, he directed three effective air strikes upon the enemy positions and twice braved intense enemy fire to move thirty meters over exposed terrain to obtain water for the heat casualties. On one occasion, he administered mouth to mouth resuscitation to revive a comrade who was suffering from intense heat. Largely due to his stamina and relentless determination, the Marines repulsed the enemy attack and successfully held their position. By his exceptional fortitude, courageous actions and inspiring devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Rebelo upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
