The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward Kenneth Ratcliffe (MCSN: 2136993), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 1 March 1967. During Operation DESOTO/DECKHOUSE VI, Corporal Ratcliffe’s company was conducting a search operation in the village of Tap An Bec near Duc Pho when his platoon came under fire from two Viet Cong. Displaying an aggressive fighting spirit and exceptional presence of mind, he shot and killed both Viet Cong, which allowed his squad to continue its advance. In the ensuing minutes, additional Viet Cong were forced from their hiding places. As his platoon pursued the fleeing enemy, Corporal Ratcliffe killed two more of the enemy and was credited with probably killing two others. Although he had expended his ammunition, he fearlessly disregarded his safety to lead his fire team into the open rice paddies in pursuit of the retreating enemy and, by his aggressive actions, was responsible for the capture of a Viet Cong. Even though he was continually exposed to hostile fire, he directed his men in conducting a thorough search of the bodies of the Viet Cong and succeeded in capturing two more of the enemy who were hiding beneath the water in the rice paddies, breathing through straws. His heroic and selfless actions without regard for his own safety inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in enabling his unit to maintain contact with the enemy for nearly two hours. By his fearless determination, aggressive leadership, and inspiring devotion to duty throughout, Corporal Ratcliffe contributed significantly to the rout of the enemy force and thereby upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
