The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant James E. Prommersberger (MCSN: 2012082), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company C, Third Engineer Battalion, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in action against enemy Viet Cong forces in Vietnam, on 16 April 1966. During an intense enemy night attack, heavy small arms and mortar fire received from more than 200 attacking Viet Cong inflicted numerous casualties on Sergeant Prommersberger’s mine clearance team. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he crawled under heavy mortar and machine gun fire to a wounded Marine and rendered assistance. Upon hearing two more wounded Marines call for help, he again crawled to their assistance. On this occasion a mortar round hit close by and he fell mortally wounded. Sergeant Prommersberger’s uncommon bravery, devotion to duty and self sacrificing efforts in behalf of his comrades reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
