The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Stanley Joseph Pasieka, Jr. (MCSN: 93348), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifle Platoon Commander with Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy near DaNang, Republic of Vietnam, on 15 January 1967. During the early morning hours Second Lieutenant Pasieka’s isolated platoon position was attacked by a Viet Cong battalion. In the three hour battle that followed his calm courage, inspirational leadership, and skillful utilization of forces available to him formed a pillar around which a highly successful defense was built. His presence was felt everywhere. Exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, he directed highly accurate artillery and mortar fire on the attackers. At other times he could be seen moving from position to position directing fires and offering encouragement to his men. Later, while still under fire, he personally organized and led teams to find and evacuate the wounded. Inspired by Lieutenant Pasieka’s heroic actions and selfless devotion to duty, the Marines threw back the enemy with deadly efficiency; sixty-one confirmed kills were recorded. The successful defense put forth by his platoon was a direct result of Lieutenant Pasieka’s calm courage and complete presence of mind. His initiative and dedication to duty in the face of great personal danger reflect credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
