The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain William P. Negron (MCSN: 0-82954), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 5 June 1968, Captain Negron’s unit came under heavy enemy artillery fire which wounded several of his men. Reacting instantly, he skillfully coordinated and supervised the expeditious evacuation of casualties and directed effective suppressive fire against the enemy. After positioning his company on 6 June, the enemy launched a fierce ground attack against the Marines. In the ensuing engagement, Captain Negron repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire as he maneuvered throughout the fire-swept area, encouraging his men, requesting and directing supporting arms fire and supervising the helicopter extraction of two of his platoons which were surrounded by the hostile force. Largely due to his superior leadership and calm presence of mind under fire, his unit accounted for approximately 100 enemy killed. By his courage, outstanding professionalism and selfless devotion to duty despite extreme personal danger, Captain Negron was instrumental in the defeat of the enemy and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
