The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Kenneth F. Moores (MCSN: 2422372), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 8 October 1968, during Operation Scotland II in Quang Tri Province, elements of Company B were occupying a night defensive position overlooking the battalion command post near Khe Sanh when Private First Class Moores alertly detected movement to the front of his observation post on the perimeter. After warning his companions, he observed an estimated squad of North Vietnamese Army soldiers advancing toward him and immediately took the enemy under fire. Fearlessly exposing himself to intense hostile fire, he hurled hand grenades into the midst of the approaching North Vietnamese, which inflicted numerous casualties upon the attacking force. Although critically wounded when an enemy hand grenade exploded in his fighting position, he resolutely continued to deliver a heavy volume of M-16 rifle fire while encouraging his fellow Marines and directing their fire against the hostile unit. Despite the pain of his injury, he steadfastly remained in his dangerously exposed position and aggressively engaged the enemy until the North Vietnamese were routed and he succumbed to his wounds. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Moores inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
