The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Phillip A. Moore (MCSN: 2269400), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Second Platoon, Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 22 April 1967. Private Moore’s squad was providing river security for a team of reconnaissance divers probing the banks for suspected communist insurgent underwater caves. Early that evening his squad was attacked from the north side of the river by enemy snipers employing automatic weapons. The first burst of fire hit Private Moore in the left arm, spinning him around and throwing him to the ground. Fully realizing the danger he was in, and suffering great pain, he crawled back to his machine gun and began returning fire. This act of heroism enabled the remainder of his squad to deploy to a nearby tree line to engage the enemy. Upon his Team Leader’s order to withdraw from the open knoll and while attempting to comply, Private Moore was mortally wounded by the enemy. By his daring actions, loyal devotion to duty and fearlessness in the face of great danger, he upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
