The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jimmy D. Moody (MCSN: 2273558), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as First Ammunition Man with the 81-mm. Mortar Platoon, Headquarters and Service Company, Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in the vicinity of the Demilitarized Zone, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam on 24 March 1967. Engaged in a search and destroy operation, the battalion was subjected to an intense enemy mortar attack and while deployed in a defensive position, Private First Class Moody immediately realized the necessity of returning quick, effective counter mortar fire. Exhibiting uncommon courage, extreme professional skill and faithful devotion to duty, he relinquished the safety of his position to man his gun. Continually exposing himself to heavy enemy fire and heedless of the danger involved, he continued to break out ammunition in order that his gun team could commence accurate, rapid and well controlled counter mortar fire. In the heroic performance of his duties, Private First Class Moody was painfully wounded by exploding mortars. Observing members of his gun team seriously wounded, he realized someone had to man the gun and continue firing. Unable to stand, he crawled to the gun and was in the process of returning effective counter mortar fire when an enemy mortar hit his gun, mortally wounding him. Private First Class Moody’s valiant fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who observed and served with him. His aggressive actions in the face of danger upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
