The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Norris D. Montjoy (MCSN: 1528788), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 May 1968, Company F was conducting a search and destroy operation near the Khe Sanh Combat Base when the unit suddenly came under intense mortar, small arms and artillery fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force. During the ensuing fire fight, all of the company officers were seriously wounded. Reacting instantly, Staff Sergeant Montjoy unhesitatingly took command of the company. Disregarding his own safety, he moved about the fire-swept terrain and skillfully maneuvered his men into a perimeter defense. Undaunted by the hostile fire impacting around him, he delivered effective fire upon the enemy emplacements as he fearlessly moved from one position to another, shouting words of encouragement to his men and directing their fire. His heroic and timely actions were instrumental in his unit accounting for sixty-seven North Vietnamese soldiers confirmed killed and forced the enemy to break contact and flee. By his courage, superb leadership and unwavering devotion to duty, Staff Sergeant Montjoy contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
