The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Alvin Monday (MCSN: 2157748), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 September 1968, elements of Company K launched an attack on an enemy occupied hill in Quang Tri Province. Fearlessly leading his Marines across the hazardous terrain in a determined assault on the objective, Lance Corporal Monday delivered a heavy volume of fire into the hostile emplacements as he resolutely shouted words of encouragement to his men and directed their fire. Repeatedly exposing himself to the enemy fire in his bold advance up the hill, Lance Corporal Monday approached to within five meters of his objective when he was seriously wounded by intense small arms fire. In an attempt to provide cover for himself and a comrade who moved to his position to administer first aid, he resolutely maneuvered to a defilade position. After being treated and although in severe pain from his injury, Lance Corporal Monday dauntlessly continued to direct the members of his team, until he succumbed to his wounds. His gallant and selfless actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, superb leadership and steadfast devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Monday upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
