The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Thomas Shores Miller (MCSN: 0-108510), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 11 June 1970, while occupying a position in defense of the village of Phu Thanh in Quang Nam Province, First Lieutenant Miller’s platoon came under a vicious ground assault by North Vietnamese Army sappers, supported by intense mortar fire. While ably directing countermortar fire on suspected enemy emplacements, he was advised that a combined Marine and Army of the Republic of Vietnam unit within the village had sustained several casualties and that numerous civilian personnel were wounded. Realizing the magnitude of the attack, he requested a variety of air support and medical evacuation helicopters. With complete disregard for his own safety, he then moved across the fire-swept terrain to a dangerously exposed forward position where he skillfully coordinated supporting artillery fire with the activities of the aircraft arriving on station, and quickly shifted the direction of fire when different units came under attack. Informed that one of his combined action teams had sustained too many casualties to adequately secure a landing site for the medical evacuation helicopters, First Lieutenant Miller disregarded the mortar rounds impacting all around him, as he unhesitatingly maneuvered to the team’s location where, continually exposed to the intense hostile fire, he directed the movement of the casualties to covered locations near a bridge. When enemy sappers attempted to overrun the Vietnamese Popular Forces soldiers who were providing security for the bridge, First Lieutenant Miller immediately proceeded to the point of heaviest contact and, despite the hostile fusillade, fearlessly moved from one fighting position to another, shouting encouragement and firing directions to the men with such courage that they were inspired to effect an aggressive defense which successfully repulsed the hostile assault. By his courage, superb leadership, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, First Lieutenant Miller upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
