The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Floyd Edwin Miller (MCSN: 2190910), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader attached to Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 April 1967, Corporal Miller’s unit came under intense enemy small arms, mortar and automatic weapons fire from a Viet Cong force in the vicinity of Nui Lac Son. Almost immediately, the platoon corpsman was killed and numerous Marines were wounded which temporarily halted the unit’s advance. Exhibiting exceptional initiative and completely disregarding his own safety, Corporal Miller unhesitatingly ran through concentrated hostile fire to the side of the mortally wounded corpsman, retrieved the medical supplies and equipment and began administering aid to the wounded. After carrying two casualties to a relatively secure position, he fearlessly ran seventy-five meters across fire-swept terrain to provide medical attention to a Marine who was wounded and lay exposed to continuous enemy fire. Throughout the fire fight, Corporal Miller skillfully assisted the injured to areas of safety and provided medical aid to his comrades, undoubtedly saving the lives of numerous Marines. Corporal Miller’s determination and heroic actions at great personal risk inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his bold initiative, steadfast courage and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Miller upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
