The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Raymond J. Michalowski (MCSN: 2323809), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), during operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 2 February 1968, Corporal Michalowski’s squad was maneuvering toward the hamlet of Thanh Quit when the Marines suddenly came under intense fire from a well concealed automatic weapon. Attempting to suppress the hostile fire, Corporal Michalowski and two companions unhesitatingly maneuvered to an advantageous position and commenced delivering accurate fire on the enemy emplacement. When one of the Marines was wounded, Corporal Michalowski picked up the man and carried him toward the remainder of his unit until he was forced to seek cover from the intense automatic weapons fire. Alertly pinpointing the location of the hostile weapon, he fearlessly stood up and began maneuvering toward the enemy emplacement. Ignoring the intense fire impacting around him, he resolutely continued his aggressive assault until he was mortally wounded. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his fellow Marine were an inspiration to all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Michalowski upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
