The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John “M” McDonnell (MCSN: 2322914), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company A, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 13 May 1967. While conducting a search and clear operation in the vicinity of Phu An in Quang Tri Province, Company A was suddenly subjected to mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire from a well camouflaged and deeply entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. As the Third Platoon advanced into position, they were temporarily pinned down by heavy hostile fire, which inflicted numerous casualties, including the machine gun team. Observing the increasing number of wounded men, Private First Class McDonnell, disregarding the intense enemy fire, raced to his fallen companions’ machine gun. Boldly remaining in an exposed position, he immediately began to deliver a heavy volume of extremely accurate fire on the enemy position, effectively suppressing their fire. Inspired by his courageous action, the remainder of the platoon moved to more protected positions and delivered additional covering fire while other Marines quickly evacuated the casualties to a relatively safe area. Not until all had been evacuated did he withdraw under cover of his own fire. As a result of his selfless, heroic effort, he was undoubtedly instrumental in saving the lives of numerous Marines while inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. By his fearless initiative, courageous action and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class McDonnell inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
