The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Lance Corporal] Robert J. Maxim (MCSN: 2141186), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company B, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 24 August 1967, Corporal Maxim was participating in Operation KINGFISHER when his platoon suddenly came under attack by a large enemy force. Reacting immediately, he moved to the flank of the assaulting enemy force and began delivering a heavy volume of fire with such accuracy that the initial attack was repelled. Undaunted by the heavy hostile fire in succeeding fanatical enemy assaults, he steadfastly maintained his position and delivered effective fire that was instrumental in repulsing each attack. During one attack an enemy explosive device landed in the fighting position occupied by Corporal Maxim and his fire team leader. With complete disregard for his own life, Corporal Maxim unhesitatingly threw his fire team leader bodily out of the position and courageously absorbed the full force of the ensuing explosion, which resulted in the traumatic amputation of his right leg below the knee and all toes on his left foot. As a result of his heroic action, he undoubtedly saved a fellow Marine from serious injury or possible death. By his fearless initiative, courage and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Maxim inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
