The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Richard G. Mangrum (MCSN: 2213707), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 7 January 1968, when one of the platoons from Company L became heavily engaged with a well entrenched North Vietnamese Army force, Corporal Mangrum volunteered to accompany the remainder of the company to a position north of Hill 28 west of Gio Linh to assist the beleaguered unit. As the reaction force approached the embattled area and came under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, Corporal Mangrum fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire and fired several light antitank assault rounds at an enemy bunker, destroying the fortification. Steadfastly remaining in his dangerously exposed position, he skillfully delivered effective rifle fire and threw hand grenades against the entrenched enemy, enabling his Marine companions to evacuate the wounded from the hazardous area. Then, as the company broke contact and withdrew to Hill 28. Corporal Mangrum volunteered to remain behind and ably provided rear security for the movement of his unit until he was mortally wounded by enemy snipe fire. His steadfast determination and selfless concern for his fellow Marines inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving numerous Marine lives. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Mangrum upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
