The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Craig Leroy Lund (MCSN: 2361128), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company M, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 May 1968, Private First Class Lund’s unit was operating near the village of Cam Vu in Quang Tri Province when the Marines suddenly came under intense mortar, artillery and automatic weapons fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force and sustained numerous casualties. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, he unhesitatingly assaulted the enemy positions and killed three North Vietnamese soldiers, two of them in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Alertly observing several casualties, he fearlessly moved about the fire-swept terrain, rendering first aid to his wounded comrades and moving them to positions of relative safety. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private First Class Lund quickly located a tank and directed it to his squad’s location. Although painfully wounded, he repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fire while embarking the casualties aboard the tank and skillfully directing its fire upon the enemy emplacements. Steadfastly refusing medical attention, he resolutely remained with his squad until his platoon commander ordered him to submit to evacuation. His bold initiative and sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Lund upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
