The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William T. Lowery (MCSN: 2135395), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company C, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 August 1969, Company C was assigned the mission of relieving an adjacent company which had been assaulted during the night by elements of a North Vietnamese Army regiment while operating west of An Hoa in Quang Nam Province. As Sergeant Lowery’s platoon was maneuvering across an open rice paddy, the Marines came under a heavy volume of fire from enemy soldiers concealed in a tree line approximately forty meters distant. Skillfully coordinating the movement of his platoon with that of units located on his flanks, Sergeant Lowery boldly rushed across the fire-swept terrain shouting instructions and encouraging his men while he simultaneously assisted in treating the casualties. Realizing that his unit was critically low on ammunition, he fearlessly moved to a rear area and obtained additional ammunition which he then distributed to his comrades. Completely disregarding his own safety, he maneuvered to the right flank of his platoon to better coordinate actions in that sector and subsequently was pinned down by intense hostile fire. Ignoring the enemy rounds impacting around him, he unhesitatingly seized the initiative and assaulted a North Vietnamese fortified position, killing the two hostile soldiers inside. Although wounded, he dauntlessly continued to lead his men until the enemy force was defeated and was instrumental in accounting for twenty-five hostile soldiers killed. By his courage, bold fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Lowery inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
