The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Thomas Everette Logan (MCSN: 2212878), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Grenadier with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 16 May 1967, Company F suddenly came under intense automatic weapons fire from an estimated battalion of well entrenched North Vietnamese Army Regulars near Phu Oc in Quang Tri Province. During the ensuing fire fight, several Marines sustained wounds and were lying in an open area within twenty meters of the enemy positions. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Logan repeatedly moved through the fire-swept terrain to render medical treatment to his injured comrades. When an enemy hand grenade landed near his position while he was administering first aid to one of the casualties, he unhesitatingly used his body as a shield and protected the wounded man from further injury. Although sustaining fragmentation wounds in the subsequent explosion, he completed treating the casualty and, despite his painful injuries, steadfastly continued to assist other wounded Marines while alternately delivering effective M-79 grenade fire against the enemy positions. His heroic and timely actions in the face of extreme personal danger were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly saved the life of a fellow Marine. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Logan upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
