The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Lowell Ray Lloyd (MCSN: 2265956), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with the Second Platoon, Company L, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, on Operation UNION II in Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam. On 26 May 1967, shortly after disembarking from their helicopter in the landing zone, the Second Platoon contacted a well concealed North Vietnamese Army unit of estimated battalion size. Immediately the Second Platoon sustained numerous casualties from intense accurate semi-automatic weapons and rifle fire directed on them by the concealed and determined enemy. Lance Corporal Lloyd while advancing and firing on the enemy position was hit in the stomach and knocked down by sniper rifle fire. Disregarding the pain of his wound, he immediately arose and moved forward unhesitatingly through withering enemy fire to the side of a seriously wounded and exposed Marine. Lance Corporal Lloyd picked up the wounded Marine and single-handed carried him 50 yards toward cover, at which time he was struck by rifle fire in the leg and knocked down again. Disregarding his multiple and painful wounds, Lance Corporal Lloyd again arose in order to carry the wounded Marine to safety, but received a third and mortal wound. He succumbed in a desperate fourth attempt to carry the wounded man. Lance Corporal Lloyd’s loyal devotion and steadfast determination in the face of intense personal pain and extreme danger undoubtedly saved the life of his fellow wounded Marine, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Lance Corporal Lloyd gallantly gave his life in service of his country and his fellow man.
