The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Bruce B. Livingston (MCSN: 2263489), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company I, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 2 September 1967. While the Third Platoon was on patrol near Con Thien, it came under intense fire from an enemy company located in a bunker complex. The lead squad was pinned down by heavy fire from small arms, machine guns, mortars, and recoilless rifles. When he saw that a fellow Marine was trapped in a small hole, Lance Corporal Livingston, without regard for his own safety, moved forward under intense enemy fire from at least two sides and laid down a base of fire which enabled the trapped man and the squad to withdraw. He remained in position and was the last man to leave, despite his injured hand which had been severely burned by the machine gun. Later in the day, when heavy contact with the enemy resumed, Lance Corporal Livingston again displayed outstanding bravery when two Marines were hedged in by enemy fire. He aggressively advanced to within a few meters of their well-camouflaged enemy position, enabling the two Marines to return to safety. He then moved forward disregarding his own safety and in this final bold and courageous act in behalf of his fellow Marines, Lance Corporal Livingston sustained a fatal wound. By his fearless initiative and selfless devotion to duty he upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
