The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Robert A. Linn, II (MCSN: 0-106604), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company C, First Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 23 March 1969, while Company C was assaulting North Vietnamese Army emplacements near Fire Support base Argonne, Second Lieutenant Linn observed that a seriously wounded Marine had fallen in a location dangerously exposed to the hostile fire. As he fearlessly led his platoon in an attempt to rescue the injured man, he alertly sighted a hostile soldier aiming his weapon at the point man from the aperture of a bunker. Reacting instantly, Second Lieutenant Linn charged the fortifications and, firing his rifle from the hip and throwing hand grenades killed the enemy. As he directed his men to search the hostile soldier for documents, two grenades thrown by a second enemy soldier within the bunker landed near one of the Marines. With complete disregard for his own safety, Second Lieutenant Linn shoved the man away and boldly assaulted the hostile emplacement, killing the remaining North Vietnamese Army soldier with grenades and rifle fire. Then, as Second Lieutenant Linn supervised the evacuation of the casualty and the Marines searched the area for intelligence information, a hostile soldier arose from a concealed position and, after throwing a satchel charge, commenced firing his rifle at the Marines. In a lone and daring repeat of his previously performances, Second Lieutenant Linn dauntlessly assaulted and killed the attacker. His heroic efforts and bold actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving his companions from seriously injury or possible death. By his grave personal danger, Second Lieutenant Linn upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
