The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Orie O. Linn (MCSN: 2156017), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company K, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 30 April 1967, Lance Corporal Linn’s squad was assigned the mission of assisting in the recovery of Marine casualties from another unit which was heavily engaged with an entrenched North Vietnamese Army force on Hill 881. As the Marines advanced up the hill, Lance Corporal Linn’s squad came under intense enemy automatic weapons fire from well camouflaged and heavily fortified bunkers. Quickly locating the enemy machine gun emplacement that had pinned down his squad, Lance Corporal Linn, completely disregarding his own safety, moved forward through the hostile fire and without assistance, courageously assaulted the enemy fortification. Armed only with a .45 caliber pistol, he killed the occupants and seized their crew-served weapon. His heroic and determined efforts at great personal risk were an inspiration to all who observed him and undoubtedly prevented numerous Marine casualties. By his steadfast courage, inspiring initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Linn upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
