The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard Victor Linde (MCSN: 2218294), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with the Third Platoon, Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 December 1966. Private First Class Linde was engaged in action as point man of the squad which was assigned to clear a Viet Cong machine gun position preventing the removal of dead and wounded Marines and holding up elements of the company. Unhesitatingly, he began a systematic and effective move on the flank of the position, continuously firing his weapon and directing the fire of his squad. Unable to advance against the deadly accurate fire or place grenades on target, Private First Class Linde attempted to reduce the enemy position by direct assault but was felled, mortally wounded by fire from the machine gun. Through his daring actions, inspiring valor and loyal devotion to duty in the face of great personal risk, he forced the enemy to withdraw and the company advanced and provided protection for the wounded and dead Marines. Private First Class Line upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
