The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Anthony Tuli Lefefe (MCSN: 1976884), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company C, First Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 6 July 1967, Company C became surrounded by a numerically superior force of North Vietnamese Regulars. The determined enemy force, engaging the Marines with intense and accurate machine gun fire, had advanced to within fifty meters of the beleaguered Marines and were preparing to assault their positions. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Lefefe requested artillery fire support and moved to a dangerously exposed position to better observe the effect of the fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved from one position to another, encouraging his men and adjusting supporting arms fire on the enemy emplacements. Throughout the night, he adjusted repeated artillery fire missions on the hostile force with pinpoint accuracy and, as a result of his determined efforts and professional skill, the enemy sustained heavy casualties and was unable to overrun the Marine positions. Directing his men to withdraw the following morning, Sergeant Lefefe provided accurate covering fire which enabled his men to evacuate all casualties and safely maneuver to friendly lines. By his courage, inspiring leadership and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Sergeant Lefefe was instrumental in the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
