The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Billy Wayne Laws (MCSN: 2156134), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, during Operation PRAIRIE in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, on 26 September 1966. Private First Class Laws’ platoon, as lead element for the Battalion, came under an intense attack from enemy machine gun fire, mines and grenades. When the point man was wounded, Private First Class Laws, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved courageously forward in an attempt to rescue his fellow Marine. As he fell, mortally wounded by machine gun fire, he shouted repeatedly to his companions not to attempt to reach him as he was under direct fire from an enemy bunker. As a result of his selfless dedication to duty and heroic actions, he undoubtedly saved the lives of many other Marines and was an inspiration to all who observed him. By his exceptional courage, presence of mind and unswerving devotion to duty, Private First Class Laws upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
